Tuesday, February 28, 2017, was an interesting day. For some (myself included) it was Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, a day of revelry and parades. For many not in New Orleans, it was an incredibly bad day in IT; Amazon Web Services experienced a massive outage in their Simple Storage Service (S3), which apparently runs a staggering portion of the Internet. Many sites were unreachable, content was unavailable, and in a true flash of irony, Amazon’s own availability dashboard was “frozen” because the icons signifying service status were hosted from…you got it, S3.

 Raytheon to Acquire Websense as Part of Billion-Dollar Cybersecurity Venture

The Wall Street Journal reports the Waltham, Massachusetts-based company has acquired network security firm Websense as part of a $1.7 billion overall investment focused on enterprise cybersecurity. The deal, which is the largest acquisition by a major U.S. defense contractor in 10 years, represents Raytheon’s latest push into the cybersecurity space. Specifically, Raytheon executives hope the new venture will smooth the transition of traditionally military- and defense-specific cybersecurity technology into the business world, particularly at a time when the threat of cyberattacks against the enterprise is steadily increasing.
