More than half of breaches (53 percent) in the financial services industry were due to hacking and/or malware attacks in Q4 2017, up from 39 percent in the first quarter of the year. Social engineering attacks also climbed to 21 percent in Q4 2017.

The number of breaches reported in the U.S. in 2018 was down 23 percent, from 1,632 to 1,244. However, the number of personally identifiable information (PII) records exposed in 2018 jumped 126 percent from 197.6 million to 446.5 million.
