Identity Theft Most Common Breach Type in H1 2017

During the first half of 2017, the percentage of data breaches attributed to identity theft grew to 74 percent, according to a Gemalto study. Of the 918 total breaches studied, 680 were related to identity theft, while 116 dealt with financial access. Breaches related to IP/sensitive assets only accounted for 6 percent of the 918 total breaches examined.

The number of breaches reported in the U.S. in 2018 was down 23 percent, from 1,632 to 1,244. However, the number of personally identifiable information (PII) records exposed in 2018 jumped 126 percent from 197.6 million to 446.5 million.
